Twilight-themed Fondant Birthday Cake

Explanation: My mother LOVES Twilight. She's addicted. I'm just as bad - but that's beside the point. This weekend, we were celebrating my mother's birthday, and I decided I wanted to make her a cake.

(Cake-making is, for me, a big deal... especially for my mother. She used to do professional wedding and birthday cakes that were absolutely stunning! I grew up watching her create absolutely beautiful creation out of cake mixes and frosting and food coloring, and I've always wanted to be able to do that, too.)

So, somewhere in there, I'm not sure where, I decided I would make her a Twilight cake. But how? I didn't know. I got some ideas online and somehow, in the midst of all that, I decided I was going to use fondant to do it. A rather crazy idea for me, considering I'd never used fondant before.

Well, long story short, I called in some special assistance from and together we created this. The initial concept was mine and I created the base cake, the checker board and ribbon. Danika sculpted the chess pieces and the beautiful flower. Everything on here - and I do mean EVERYTHING - is edible, made of marshmallow fondant, butter cream frosting, food coloring and... yes, a real apple. It's covered in fondant, but it's a real apple under there. (Danika has a pic of this on her account, too, since this SO wouldn't have been possible without her help - go tell her how lovely that flower is!)

Mom -loved- it, as did nearly every other woman present that evening (the men just didn't get it). She screamed when I went to cut it.
